USG GUIDED LIVER BIOPSY: It is a procedure in which abnormal liver conditions are diagnosed. Small portion of Liver is removed by means of special needle to examine under microscope. Liver tissue allows the doctor to see whether liver is in intact condition or any kind of damage caused to it so far. The most common method is Percutaneously through the skin. This procedure helps to diagnose liver abnormalities including hepatitis, inflammation or malignancy. Before performing this procedure patient should not take any blood thinning medicines for a week. Patient is supposed to be on NBM (Nil by mouth) i.e. without any food or beverage for atleast 4 hrs before the procedure. Some blood test are required before the procedure. At the time of examination, patient is lied on his back. Ultrasound images of the abdomen will be obtained to locate the exact area of biopsy. A gel is applied over the abdomen region which helps the sound waves to travel from machine to abdomen easily. A transducer, small probe like device will be placed over the area which is being examined. There’s no pain but patient may feel mild pressure from the transducer. Once the area is identified the Interventional Radiologist will clean the abdomen region and place sterile drapes over the work area and numb the biopsy site. Since, the medication is injected patient may experience a slight stinging sensation. As the injected medication affects the work area, the imaging physician explains the patient breathing technique to be practised during the actual biopsy to make him comfortable. During, the biopsy, special needle device is used to remove the sample of liver. Patient is kept under observation for minimum 24 hrs post biopsy. He may experience certain amount of radiating pain at shoulder region. The extracted liver sample is sent to laboratory for analysis. Patient may feel some discomfort at the site of puncture. The lab report takes approximately 5-7 days for the final report.
