PERMCATH REMOVAL PROCEDURE : When patient doesn’t need dialysis anymore then a long hollow tube called as dialysis catheter is removed. In case if there is any infection due to catheter then also it is removed. Before the procedure : Patient is kept on NBM (Nil by mouth) for 8-10 hrs before the procedure. Incase of any blood thinners doctor is to be consulted. Also for diabetic patients insulin dose is adjusted by doctor. During the procedure : Local anaesthesia is given to the patient to numb the area to be operated. Doctor makes a small incision and removes the catheter from the vein. In this, doctor uses two hemostats to release the cuff from the tissue poking deep into the hole by helding pressure at the jugular (entrance site under the skin) and slides the catheter out. Tip culture is done for redness and drainage at the exit site. Once catheter and port are removed gauze is placed, the area is stitched and bandaged to cover the operated area. This procedure takes around 15-20 minutes. After the procedure : Patient is kept under observation for few hours before discharge. Patient is instructed to keep the area clean and protect from water until the wound is healed. At times patient may experience some redness or swelling in the operated area which on medication is treated. • The advantage of dialysis catheter placement is that necessary, life saving dialysis treatment is possible. • During the catheter insertion inside blood vessel damage to the blood vessel, bruising or bleeding at the puncture site with infection may occur. Some patients may have temporarily disturbed Heart rhythm which is corrected by adjusting the catheter position. • There is potential for pneumothorax (air in the chest causing a lung to collapse). This is reduced with the use of image guidance in the placement of the catheter. • If the catheter placed in the veins is extended for certain period then infection, leakage of fluid from broken catheters, heart arrhythmias may occur. Physician provides proper consultation to the patient to prevent any complications and guides the patient from time to time.
